Fall 2024 Updates
As fall settles in, we at CHPCA would like to take a moment to reflect on the important work our members have been engaged in over the past few months. Their efforts continue to raise awareness and drive progress on critical issues at the intersection of health and climate change. Here are some key highlights:
Dr. Mark Mitchell authored an insightful article examining the healthcare disparities in Connecticut, shedding light on the underlying causes and offering potential solutions. He also wrote a timely piece on the recent decision not to bid on off-shore wind projects and its health implications, emphasizing the importance of clean energy in protecting public health.
Dr. Sanjiv Godse was recently featured in a news article discussing the health impacts of the extreme heatwaves we experienced this summer. Additionally, he published a paper addressing the concerns of caregivers of children with asthma, particularly in relation to the growing health risks posed by climate change.
We are incredibly proud of the dedication and expertise of our members, and we look forward to continuing to work together toward a healthier, more sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates and news from CHPCA!
CHPCA, along with numerous other health care groups, signed onto the American Lung Association’s letter to the EPA regarding expanding the scope of newly proposed powerplant regulations. These regulations would be a win for health and our environment. Click the link to read the letter.
Victory for Environmental Justice: Passing SB1147
The CT general assembly passed Senate Bill 1147: An Act Concerning the Environmental Justice Program of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. This bill protects families’ health and the environment by enhancing the state’s environmental justice statute and providing DEEP and the Connecticut Siting Council with the ability to deny permits for facilities that would worsen pollution in already-overburdened areas. Limiting these exposures is a win for CT!
We are proud to have joined on with the CT Coalition for Climate Action. The collective action of this coalition made the passage of this landmark bill possible.
